The Project Superintendent is also responsible for regulatory inspections, quality control, and job site safety.
Key Responsibilities
The responsibilities of the Project Superintendent include, but are not limited to:
Planning & Preparation
- Having a thorough understanding of the General Contract, each Subcontract, the contract drawings, and specifications
- Reviewing the project plans, including equipment, manpower, materials, quantities, quality control procedures, safety and security practices, temporary utilities, and staging areas
- In consultation with the Operations Manager, developing the Project Schedule and keep the schedules properly updated, and ensuring the project meets the various milestone dates.
- Verifying that each Subcontractor has completed their contractual requirements before beginning their work at the jobsite.
- Ensuring that all required permits or licenses have been obtained, and that the bulletin board is installed on which all required safety notices are posted.
Management & Operations
- Managing all operations, processes and personnel required to complete the construction phase of assigned projects, including:
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with the on-site employees and any external parties
- Topsoil operations: stripping, stockpiling, placing and finishing
- Dirt & gravel operations: pit development, scrapers, trucks, hauling, finishing, grades and material gradations
- Ensuring materials have been ordered and monitoring their delivery status
- Meeting projected production targets, quality specifications, and time lines
- Managing the performance of the Construction Crew and Subcontractors, which includes:
- Performing an orientation process if they are new to the project site
- Clearly communicating their responsibilities and discussing the best way to work together to schedule crews, sequence activities, and resolve issues.
- Working closely with the Operations Manager to resolve any issues, and schedule the project’s resource needs in conjunction with the needs of other projects
- Performing as the lead contact for all external parties on the project site, including the client’s project manager and regulatory bodies
- Collaborating with the Paving and Crushing crews to ensure their activities are scheduled and completed efficiently and effectively
- Working with the on-site mechanic or Shop Foreman to prioritize and complete equipment repairs and preventive maintenance
- Ensuring that all communications are done in a respectful manner, particularly during stressful situations
Safety & Compliance
- Ensuring that “Safety First” is understood and demonstrated by all project personnel, including:
- Consistently assessing the project site for potential hazards or safety concerns, and ensuring crews are inspecting their work areas and equipment before use
- Escalating any project safety issues, and ensuring these issues are resolved appropriately
- Conducting weekly safety meetings
- Inspecting work to ensure that workmanship conforms to regulatory and contractual specifications.
- Enforce and comply with company safety policies, EEO policies, and standard company procedures.
- Attending the annual Foreman’s meeting and OSHA training
- Discuss, document and address all EEO complaints immediately.
Administration
- Daily review of production reports
- Daily review and approval of time cards
- Reviewing pay estimates, and ensuring we have been paid for all work items
- Agreeing on quantities and amounts with the client’s Project Manager
Requirements/Experience
- High School Diploma or G.E.D. preferred
- Have a current driver’s license
- A minimum of 3 years managing D.O.T. highway projects for a heavy civil contractor.
- OSHA safety training
- Willing to work overtime, as required.
- Work schedule is weather dependent, so flexibility is required.
- Work is performed in an outdoor setting, which could include inclement weather, heat and cold, and exposure to dust and asphalt.

Functional Summary
Reporting to the Crusher Foreman, the Gravel Tester is responsible for testing gravel for gradations in size at our gravel pits to determine suitability for use in highway or road construction. This position requires traveling for extended periods of time to perform duties at various locations.
Key Responsibilities
The responsibilities of the Gravel Tester include, but are not limited to:
Testing
- Obtain and/or receive gravel sample for testing
- Weigh sample before and after heating to determine moisture content
- Take gravel and place in splitter to split the samples and reduce them in size
- Place gravel in pan upon a stove and heat gravel until thoroughly dry
- Once the gravel is dry, pour the gravel (weighing up to 15 lbs.) through a Gilson. Flip switch for the gravel to pass through screens for separation
- Once gravel had been able to settle on a screen, the gravel on each individual screen is weighed
- Complete paperwork to record the percent of gravel passing through each sieve.
- Understand and follow directions from supervisors as to required work area.
- Train new employees on how to safely and efficiently test gravel.
- Assist with the set-up, tear-down, and mobilization of the Crusher.
- Undertake other construction related duties as required, such as assisting other employees working in the gravel pit or on the Crusher.

As a member of a larger team of mechanics, the mechanic must be able to work independently, as part of a team, travel to our various projects sites, and work over-time as needed.
Key Responsibilities
The responsibilities of the Mechanic include, but are not limited to:
Duties
- Maintain, repair and trouble shoot problems on all road construction equipment and trucks. Includes paving equipment, rollers, loaders, water trucks, tractors/belly dump trailers, skid steers, scrapers, excavators, dozers and brooms. Also, responsible to maintain and work on smaller equipment & tools, including pickups, water pumps, plate compactors, etc.
- General mechanical, engine & transmission trouble-shooting, hydraulic, electrical, cutting & welding, minor fabrication, and an overall understanding of road building equipment.
- Stock and organize assigned tool van with parts to meet the needs of the equipment on the project assigned.
- Identify mechanical failures and future preventive maintenance needs.

The Shop Foreman will be based in Columbia Falls, with some travel to our various project sites required.
Key Responsibilities
The responsibilities of the Shop Foreman include, but are not limited to:
- Managing the day-to-day operations of the workshop, including managing the performance of all the mechanics and maintenance personnel
- Troubleshooting and researching equipment repair issues. The types of equipment include: loaders, trucks, trailers, mixer trucks, skid steers, scrapers, excavators, dozers, brooms, pickups and paving equipment. The types of issues include: mechanical, engine, transmission, hydraulic, electrical, cutting and welding, and minor fabrication.
- Working with the Operations Leader to prioritize equipment repairs, assign mechanics to jobs, and make repair versus purchase decisions
- Interacting with the mechanics to understand the status of repairs and inspecting the repairs to ensure they are complete
- Working with the Dirt, Paving and Crushing crews to schedule preventative maintenance needs and troubleshoot unscheduled repairs
- Researching and negotiating with vendors on purchases and repairs of equipment and parts
- Tracking costs; reviewing and approving invoices and timecards
- Sharing knowledge and developing the mechanics to enable them to gain new skills and improve their performance
- Lead and participate in safety meetings, and ensure that “Safety First” is understood and demonstrated

- Previous experience managing a workshop or supervising mechanics is preferred

- Ability to learn and handle various solvents and fluids used in the repair and maintenance of heavy equipment
- A willingness to work overtime, if required, especially when shuttling employees
- A willingness to occasionally work out of town in the field for very short periods of time (lodging and transportation will be provided)
- Ability to occasionally lift at least 75 pounds
- Must comply with the company’s drug and alcohol testing requirements.
Compensation offered with this role will be based on work experience and capability

Role Responsibilities
– The primary responsibilities of the Accounting Manager are:
work closely with the Controller to manage all facets of the accounting function
ensure the smooth operation of the front office
manage all clerical accounting staff
ensure the accounts payable, accounts receivable and payroll processes are completed in a timely manner and are accurate
– Responsibilities relating to the front office include:
maintain a professional demeanor with staff and provide excellent customer service across the business
streamline processes and workflow for the accounting department
– Responsibilities relating to managing all Accounting clerical staff include:
workflow planning, prioritization, and issue resolution
management of off-site billing clerk/scale attendant
– Responsibilities relating to Accounts Payable include:
manage the Accounts Payable staff
maintain vendor files
annual preparation and distribution of 1099s
monitor annual management of W-9’s to maintain compliance
manage electronic invoice approval
– Responsibilities relating to Accounts Receivables include:
manage the Accounts Receivable staff from the credit approval process to collections
perform revenue reconciliations for gravel/asphalt/concrete sales from general ledger to job cost to make sure pits have been billed correctly
monthly review of retail freight revenue or loss
– Responsibilities relating to the preparation of the monthly Financial Statements include:
reconcile balance sheet accounts
prepare equipment values for insurance purposes
perform monthly royalty calculation and preparing payment between SCCI and SSG
– Other responsibilities that are required quarterly and annually include:
track and renew all business licenses, Dun & Bradstreet, SAM, 2290 reporting, etc.
Sand & Gravel, Inc. – Bookkeeper
– The primary responsibility of the Bookkeeper is to ensure the accounting processes are completed in a timely manner and are accurate, and to perform a review of the financial statements.
– Manage the accounting staff for all facets of the data entry and processing of information.
– Responsibilities relating to Accounts Payable include:
prepare monthly royalty payments to the land owners
prepare quarterly and annual royalty withholding tax payments
annual preparation and distribution of 1099s
– Responsibilities relating to Accounts Receivables include:
perform revenue reconciliation for gravel/asphalt/concrete sales from GL to job cost to make sure pits have been billed correctly
perform intercompany equipment and batch plant rental billings
– Responsibilities relating to Payroll include:
process quarterly payroll tax and workers compensation reports
process and distribute annual W-2 statements
– Monthly financial statement preparation responsibilities include:
reconcile general ledger accounts
prepare equipment values for insurance purposes
monitor and reconcile bank account statements
process fixed assets and depreciation reports
– Other responsibilities that are required annually include:
track and renew all business licenses, Dun & Bradstreet, SAM, etc.

o Keeping the conference room presentable, clean, and well-stocked, which includes weekly trips to the grocery store for supplies.
o Assisting co-workers with special projects.
Responsibilities relating to Accounts Payable include:
o Data Entry of invoices.
o Organizing and filing check stubs by number.
o Packaging check runs.
o Organizing fuel receipts for data entry.
o Assisting in annual vendor maintenance.
Responsibilities relating to Accounts Receivables include:
o Filing all billing paperwork.
Responsibilities relating to Payroll include:
o Filing certified payroll sheets into appropriate job folders.
o Assisting in packaging payroll checks.
o Preparing new hire packets.
Responsibilities relating to Accounting Department include:
o Diesel usage data entry.
o Filing Subcontractor documentation.
o Annual boxing of files.
